Anti-government conspiracy theories seem clearly to have played a role in April 2009, in Pittsburgh, when a young man named Richard Poplawski allegedly gunned down three Pittsburgh Police Bureau officers responding to a 911 domestic disturbance call at his residence.

The longer I do this crime blogging thing, the more I try to shy away both from editorializing and from fear-mongering. But I can't help but feel we'll hear from more Richard Poplawskis in the years to come. There are changes happening in the world that they, to say the least, don't like very much. After all, prior to 9/11/01, the worst modern act of terrorism committed on American soil was committed by Americans. And one of those Americans, Tim McVeigh, happened to have pages from The Turner Diaries with him when he was arrested.

I'm just saying: while we were searching for the key to eliminating Al Qaeda, guys like Richard Poplawski didn't go anywhere. Hell, they may have even multiplied. Just remember that.

Richard Andrew Poplawski was a young man convinced the nation was secretly controlled by a cabal that would eradicate freedom of speech, take away his guns and use the military to enslave the citizenry. ...

Mr. Poplawski's view of guns and personal freedom took a turn toward the fringes of American politics. With Mr. Perkovic, he appeared to share a belief that the government was controlled from unseen forces, that troops were being shipped home from the Mideast to police the citizenry here, and that Jews secretly ran the country.

"We recently discovered that 30 states had declared sovereignty," said Mr. Perkovic, who lives in Lawrenceville. "One of his concerns was why were these major events in America not being reported to the public."

Believing most media were covering up important events, Mr. Poplawski turned to a far-right conspiracy Web site run by Alex Jones, a self-described documentarian with roots going back to the extremist militia movement of the early 1990s.

Around the same time, he joined Florida-based Stormfront, which has long been a clearinghouse Web site for far-right groups. He posted photographs of his tattoo, an eagle spread across his chest.

"I was considering gettin' life runes on the outside of my calfs," he wrote. Life runes are a common symbol among white supremacists, notably followers of The National Alliance, a neo-Nazi group linked to an array of violent organizations. ...

GOP Takeover Planner Was Registered Independent

The man who last fall began planning to take control of the Oklahoma Republican Party was at the time a registered Independent voter, Oklahoma County Election Board records show. Al Gerhart of the Oklahoma Constitutional Alliance, who has stirred emotions and controversy both within and without his group with his talk of an armed citizen militia and attacks on GOP State Chairman Gary Jones, changed his registration to Republican at year's end. As related below on this page, Gerhart outlined his plan to take control of the state GOP in a website posting six months ago. Meanwhile, the fallout from Gearhart's statements during a Tea Party rally continues.

It started off just weeks ago as a Facebook page to challenge the Tea Party's message. Within two weeks it enticed over 22,000 "fans," hundreds of volunteers across the nation, a mention from The Associated Press, and uncorroborated accusations from conservatives of being an "astroturf" operation.

TheOther95.com was founded this month by writer and messaging consultant Marco Ceglie and a few of his friends after they grew frustrated with the "free ride" the media has given the Tea Party movement, which he described as a "fringe group" receiving undeserved credence.

"Their passions are being manipulated and harnessed to serve a very narrow political agenda that may not necessarily be their own,” Ceglie said of the Tea Partiers in an interview with Raw Story. "People are really being urged to think with their emotions and not with reason or logic."

On tax day, the group’s volunteer activists swarmed Tea Party protests in dozens of states with signs mocking the fundamental premise of the movement, displaying large posters (among other signs) that read: "The Other 95% say thanks for our tax cuts, Obama!"

Taking note, RedState.com co-founder Erick Erickson wrote a post Sunday speculating whether "the Obama administration is behind a new anti-tea party website called The Other 95," labeling its actions "right out of Lenin’s handbook, forget Alinsky." The theory was elevated on the conservative blogs Instapundit and Riehl World View, though none were able to offer proof.

Ceglie dismissed the allegation, calling it "unfounded" and part of a "fishing expedition." Though he has worked as a freelance consultant for nonpartisan progressive organizations in the past, Ceglie declared that he and the group's founding members are "not at all" affiliated with President Obama or the Democratic establishment.

"I’ve never met George Soros," he quipped. "I wish I had some of his money but I don’t. It doesn’t take that much money to create a Facebook group and some signs. These right-wingers are trying to discredit us for their own gain."

Members of The Other 95 did, however, praise Obama and promote his campaign logo while counter-protesting at tax day rallies.

Last week at an event at the National Press Club, Media Matters for America's Ari Rabin-Havt asked News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch whether Fox News' extensive promotion of the tea party movement was appropriate. Murdoch replied that he didn't think Fox News "should be supporting the Tea Party" but would like to "investigate" "before condemning anyone."

Media Matters subsequently offered to assist Murdoch's investigation, sending him extensive documentation of Fox's prior glowing coverage of the tea parties. But in case that seems for some reason insufficient, we've now identified what for Fox News must be an unimpeachable source: The Tea Party Express.

Tea Party Bus Have you wondered how the Tea Party, portrayed as a "grassroots" movement, could possibly raise enough money in one year to procure a professionally-painted, luxury motor coach and send it on two highly-publicized national tours? Or how the Tea Party so quickly developed the expertise to plan, organize and execute the tours, and consistently draw major media attention to them?

The answer is that the Tea Party Express is not a "grassroots" effort. The Web site Politico.com obtained and posted a proposal (pdf) showing that long-time Republican party operatives are, in fact, directing the "Tea Party Express" portion of the movement. The "group" and its activities are the result of efforts by a Republican-affiliated political consulting and public relations firm, Russo Marsh & Rogers, based in Sacramento, California. PR executive Sal Russo of Russo, Marsh & Rogers is also the chief strategist for the Our Country Deserves Better, political action committee (PAC) formed in 2008 to oppose then-candidate Barack Obama.

The Tea Party has been billed as an organic grassroots operation, but a newly uncovered document obtained by Politico suggests the movement has been successfully co-opted as a Republican fundraising ploy.

GOP political consultant Joe Wierzbicki floated the proposal a year ago today to create the Tea Party Express, a nationwide bus tour to "give a boost to our PAC and position us as a growing force/leading force as the 2010 elections come into focus." His idea eventually became one of the best known brands in the Tea Party movement.

The document cautioned planners to be careful when discussing the ruse to use Tea Parties for political gain. "We have to be very, very careful about discussing amongst ourselves anyone we include 'outside of the family' because quite frankly, we are not only not part of the political establishment or conservative establishment, but we are also sadly not currently a part of the 'tea party' establishment," Wierzbicki wrote.

Wierzbicki, who works for the Sacramento firm Russo Marsh + Rogers, went on to outline how conservative media including Fox News could be leveraged to hype the Tea Party Express. He recommended using "mentions and possibly even promotion from conservative/pro-tea party bloggers, talk radio hosts, Fox News commentators, etc..."

I noted a few months back TPM Media's report that the PAC that organized the Tea Party Express, a series of right-wing nationwide bus tours and rallies, had sent nearly two thirds of its spending during a recent reporting period right back to the GOP consulting firm that spawned it. Today, Politico's Ken Vogel provides more details of the Tea Party Express' operations, including the original memo from a consultant with the firm, Russo Marsh + Rogers, proposing its creation.

Vogel also reports that a substantial percentage of spending from the PAC, Our Country Deserves Better PAC, continues to flow directly into the coffers of Russo Marsh + Rogers. That appears to have been the intent from the beginning; Vogel reports that the firm's operative, Joe Wierzbicki, stated in proposing the Express that it could "give a boost to our PAC and position us as a growing force/leading force as the 2010 elections come into focus."

Since the Express' inception, Fox News has seemingly done everything in its power to provide that boost.

In the memo, which Vogel reports was issued "just days after" last year's April 15 tea parties, Wierzbicki lays out how the first Tea Party Express bus tour would operate, who would be invited to participate, and how they would build a fundraising campaign behind it. CNN pimps Great American Tea Party Express PR and Propaganda Tour

If you gave a Tea Party and no one came, would it still be news? If, on the other hand, Koch Industries and the RNC gave a Tea Party and a handful of people came, would it still be news? Or would reporting it three or four times a day make it news?

Shoq and StopBeck pointed me to something I hadn't noticed: CNN is serving as a built-in PR machine for the Tea Party Express.

Since the kickoff of the TeaParty Express Tour, CNN has embedded a small press corps in their custom-painted "CNN Express" press bus for the sole purpose of following teabaggers around the country , reporting 3-4 times daily on the activities of the corporate-funded, RNC-connected Tea Party Express.

This clip from Wednesday boggled my mind. You can see how few there are at this rally, but watch as Ali Velshi and Ed Lavandera turn it into a "movement".

The Tea Party Puppeteers has a history that can be googled.

Koch & Murdoch have both employed colonels who have engaged in state-sponsored-terrorism and overthrow of democratically elected government by force of arms.

Murdoch's Fox created 9-12dc, but Freedomworks controlled it down to charging for speaker time at the stage microphones, to placement of the sponsors logos on it website.

One of the logos was RightMarch.org, a project of William Greene, who is a frequent partner of Randall Terry (Operation Rescue). Terry attended and witnessed for Scott Roeder's murder trial.

Roeder is a militiaman, convicted of transporting bomb-making materials. As Murdoch's spokesperson Sean Hannity said "a Timothy McVeigh wannabe". Neither Glenn Beck, nor Sean Hannity says as word that Rupert Murdoch doesn't want them to say.

Roeder, who in the 1990s was a manufacturing assemblyman, also was involved in the "Freemen" movement.

"Freemen" was a term adopted by those who claimed sovereignty from government jurisdiction and operated under their own legal system, which they called common-law courts. Adherents declared themselves exempt from laws, regulations and taxes and often filed liens against judges, prosecutors and others, claiming that money was owed to them as compensation.

In April 1996, Roeder was arrested in Topeka after Shawnee County sheriff's deputies stopped him for not having a proper license plate. In his car, officers said they found ammunition, a blasting cap, a fuse cord, a one-pound can of gunpowder and two 9-volt batteries, with one connected to a switch that could have been used to trigger a bomb.

Jim Jimerson, supervisor of the Kansas City ATF's bomb and arson unit, worked on the case.

"There wasn't enough there to blow up a building," Jimerson said at the time, but he said it could make several powerful pipe bombs. ...

Scott P. Roeder, the 51 year-old man being held as a person of interest in the murder of abortion provider Dr. George Tiller, was previously arrested for having bomb-making materials and was affiliated with right-wing militia members known as Freemen.

... The commander of the Kansas Unorganized Citizens Militia in the mid-1990s, Morris Wilson, said he knew Roeder.

"I'd say he's a good ol' boy except he was just so fanatic about abortion," said Wilson, according to McClatchy. "He was always talking about how awful abortion was. But there's a lot of people who think abortion is awful."

Suzanne James, a former director of victim's services for Shawnee County, said she remembered Roeder from his previous trial in 1996.

"He was part of the One Supreme Court, a Freemen group based out of Shawnee County," James told McClatchy reporter Judy Thomas. "He was fanatic about a lot of things. I went to one of his court appearances and thought, 'This guy is dangerous.' There were a lot of red flags that came up about him."

New details on Roeder's ties to militia group

There were at least two dozen similar postings between August of 1995 and April of 1996.

Then, they suddenly stopped, right before Scott Roeder was pulled over for not having an official license plate...

... Metro News archives show that in early April, Shawnee County sheriff's were concerned the Freemen group might be planning something similar to the standoff that was happening at the same time between members of the Montana Freemen and the FBI.

There was concern the Freemen had an attack planned for April 19th, the one year anniversary of the Oklahoma City Bombings.

Shawnee County law enforcement was put on heightened alert, and, less than a week later, on April 16th, Scott Roeder was arrested for having blasting caps and bomb making materials in his car.

Tea Partying Militia Leader Arrested for Rape, Possessing a Grenade Launcher

A former Marine with ties to Tea Parties and militias who talked openly about using his training “to become a domestic terrorist” has been charged in separate complaints with raping a child and possessing an unregistered grenade launcher. His arrest may signal that a wing of the Tea Parties is heading in a more militant direction.

Charles Allan Dyer, 29, of Marlow, Oklahoma was arrested on January 12 at his home by Stephens County Sheriff’s deputies on the rape charge. The arrest occurred after a 7-year-old girl told sexual-abuse experts about a January 2nd incident at Dyer's home.

While sheriff's deputies were at Dyer's home, they found several firearms and a Colt M-203, 40-millimeter grenade launcher, according to court documents. When they searched a national crime database, the deputies discovered that the grenade launcher was one of three stolen from a military base at Fort Irwin, California, in 2006. According to an affidavit, Dyer told law enforcement that he had received the grenade launcher "from his best friend who gave it to him while Dyer was stationed in California with the Marine Corps" (United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma, Criminal Complaint, Case No. M-10-36-BA, January 14, 2010, pp. 2-3).

Dyer left the Marines last year after being brought up on charges of uttering "disloyal” statements, including his starring in several inflammatory YouTube videos which called for armed resistance against the U.S. government. In one video, Dyer exclaimed, "With DHS blatantly calling patriots, veterans, and constitutionalists a threat, all that I have to say is you’re damn right we're a threat. We're a threat to anyone that endangers our rights and the Constitution of this republic." He invited viewers to join him at his makeshift training area—"I'm sure the DHS will call it a terrorist training camp.”

... The question in play with Tiller/terrorism goes to future violence – the actions of others. If Tiller’s killer has allies – direct allies or people who agree with what they think he was doing – calling him a “terrorist” will tend to exalt his actions to them. They will perceive it less as an ugly murder and more as political violence done for a cause – something righteous.

If Tiller’s killer were to become widely viewed as a “terrorist,” this would deepen the resolve of his “allies” because they would come to regard the political structure as arrayed against them and their cause. Tiller’s killer would look heroic to them, and his example is one they might seek to emulate in their ideological struggle.

The better approach is to methodically and calmly apply the criminal law to the killing – without rhetorical excess. Putting aside the “political” content will let the ugliness and sadness of the murder carry the day in terms of public attention. This will signal to abortion opponents who might be susceptible to “radicalization” that violence is something sad and pathetic people do. The criminal law accords criminals the justice they are due, families grieve, and the society moves on.

These messages will drain power from the idea of using violence to advance political aims. The best way to talk about the killing of Dr. Tiller is to deal with it only as a grisly and pathetic murder – if the goal is to protect doctors who perform abortion from future violence.

(ChattahBox)—-Fox News blowhard Sean Hannity is apparently a fan of notorious mass murderer and domestic terrorist Timothy McVeigh. And his appreciative right-wing teabagger audience, when compared to the Oklahoma City bomber cheered and applauded his statement. No, this is not some sort of sick April Fool’s joke.

During a recent segment of his program held inside the Reagan Library, with guests California Republican Congressmen David Drier and Kevin McCarthy, Sean Hannity discussed ways for Republicans to take back power in the mid-term elections. The discussion was filled with such falsehoods, as McCarthy’s claim that President Obama personally, doubled the debt of all 43 prior presidents combined.

At one point during the program Hannity, asked “How many days until we kick Obama out?

But his most egregious statement cast Timothy McVeigh in a positive light and compared him to the raucous tea party movement:

HANNITY: “When you think about the vast majorities that they have in Congress and they had to bribe, backroom deals, corruption, that’s all because the tea party movement, the people — all these Tim McVeigh wannabes here.”

(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)

As a reminder of who Timothy McVeigh is: On April 19, 1995, with the help of Terry Nichols, McVeigh bombed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, killing 168 innocent people, many of them children, and injuring more than 680.

McVeigh was linked to anti-government Michigan militia and he planned his deadly and cowardly act of terrorism on the second anniversary of the Waco Siege.

Since the election of our first black president and the rise of the angry, anti-government tea party movement, our country has seen an alarming growth in armed, Apocalyptic militia groups. Just recently a heavily armed Michigan-based Christian militia group, named the Hutaree was arrested for plotting to murder police officers and their families, with the aim of igniting an anti-government insurrection.

Hannity’s statement is despicable and the crowds’ cheering more so.

Sean Hannity owes an apology to the families of the 168 people McVeigh murdered in 1995, to the families of the 680 people McVeigh injured, to the people of Oklahoma City and to his country.

On April 1, the Examiner’s Tucker Phelps was shocked that, speaking to a group of “Republican and Teabagger fans” (stay classy!), the following exchange occurred:

Near the end of the discussion, at about the 7:45 mark, Hannity brags, "I think we won the debate... When you think of the vast majorities that they have in Congress and they had to bribe, backroom deals, corruption. That's all because the Tea Party movement, the people, all these Tim McVeigh wannabes here." Even if it was a slip of the tongue, what kind of slip is that? Just as disturbing is the rousing audience applause in response and the silence from the two Republican Congressmen.

On TV and the radio, Beck rarely bothers to mention the militia movement by name. Instead, he's simply co-opted their rhetoric as his own. He's acted as a crucial transmitter, warning about Obama fronting his own private "army," and urging followers to "start food storage."

Not to mention these previous militia moments:

• Beck asserts: "The second American revolution is being playing out right now"

• Beck says "what is ahead may loosen the bonds of society," may end with "a French Revolution"

• Beck: "There is a coup going on ... it has been done through the guise of an election"

• Beck: "You can't convince me that the founding fathers wouldn't allow you to secede"

• Beck: "[I]f we don't have some common sense, we're facing the destruction of our country... it's coming"

That's right, some Tea Party leaders instinctively tagged the Hutaree compound as one of their own as it came under attack from federal law enforcement officials. And can you blame them? Today's right-wing, Obama-hating rhetoric -- as amplified by Glenn Beck and much of the GOP Noise Machine -- is indistinguishable from the militia message.

Monday is the 235th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington, marking the start of the Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775. Regrettably, the date has become the nexus for right-wing nutcases who actually believe the American establishment - government, military, banks, corporations, et al. - will sit around and do nothing while they, the new Sons of Liberty, launch a second American Revolution.

Adding fuel to their beady little burning eyes, April 19 is an anniversary of sorts for two of their favorite martyrs, David Koresh and Timothy McVeigh. On April 19, 1993, 76 members of the Branch Davidian religious sect, including their leader Koresh, burned to death when fire destroyed their Waco, Texas, compound at the end of a 51-day siege by federal agents. Two years later, following his bombing of the Alfred Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, McVeigh said he chose the date, April 19, 1995, in retaliation for the government's actions at Waco and at the Randy Weaver family cabin in Ruby Ridge, Idaho.

Now we learn of an apocalyptic militia calling itself Hutaree that planned to kill cops and federal agents, possibly on April 19, before it was busted. Also on that date, another group plans an "open-carry," meaning armed, protest in the Washington, D.C., area. And the Tea Party Patriots' Web site, in a nearly incomprehensible screed, calls for an "Articles of Freedom Rally" on, what else, April 19:

The Internet posting declares: "We need at least 10% of the population 20 Million people (they're only off by 10 million) to show up for our Demands to hold any water! If you let people know and let's Change our constitution back the way it should be! CUT THE TYRANNY OUT!! THE MOB RULE!!...THEY HAVE GONE TOO FAR AND WE NEED THIS change\VICTORY or the next party in office might be OK,...? roll the dice.. This is the only way unless you want to all be a zombie in an 'Socialist' or worse government."

According to Murphy and Talley, Oklahoma Tea Party leaders are so “frustrated by recent political setbacks” that they have been talking with state legislators about the possibility of creating “a new volunteer militia to help defend against what they believe are improper federal infringements on state sovereignty.” The AP report pointed out that “Tea party movement leaders say they've discussed the idea with several supportive lawmakers and hope to get legislation next year to recognize a new volunteer force. They say the unit would not resemble militia groups that have been raided for allegedly plotting attacks on law enforcement officers.”

"Is it scary? It sure is," said tea party leader Al Gerhart of Oklahoma City, co-founder of the Sooner Tea Party – which held its first open meeting for the general public in October of last year – and the head of an umbrella group of tea party factions called the Oklahoma Constitutional Alliance. "But when do the states stop rolling over for the federal government?"

Gerhart, a carpenter by trade, was a recent guest on Oklahoma Forum, “your source for meaningful discussion that informs, engages and connects each Oklahoman.” On November 8, 2009, at the Sooner Tea Party Blog – “limited government; individual freedom; personal responsibility” – Gerhart posted a piece titled “The Battle for the Republic Begins,” in which he maintained that “the power to stop Obama in his tracks” resides with the 10th Amendment to the Constitution.

While Gerhart has a “Page” at the Freedom Works website, it appears that he hasn’t posted anything since September 30, 2009.

"Have they heard of the Oklahoma City bombing?" said Joseph Thai, a constitutional law professor at the University of Oklahoma. Such actions could "throw fuel in the fire of radicals," he said.

“State Sen. Randy Brogdon, R-Owasso, a Republican candidate for governor who has appealed for tea party support, said supporters of a state militia have talked to him, and that he believes the citizen unit would be authorized under the Second Amendment to the Constitution,” AP reported. The founding fathers "were not referring to a turkey shoot or a quail hunt. They really weren't even talking about us having the ability to protect ourselves against each other," Brogdon said. "The Second Amendment deals directly with the right of an individual to keep and bear arms to protect themselves from an overreaching federal government."

Another Tea Party leader, J.W. Berry of the Tulsa-based OKforTea, helped initiatite the discussion through his newsletter under the subject "Buy more guns, more bullets."

"It's not a far-right crazy plan or anything like that," Berry said. "This would be done with the full cooperation of the state Legislature."

Seven and a half minutes into their adulation of Reagan, Hannity says this.

DREIER: We did win the debate.

HANNITY: Guys, thank you for being here.

What in the holy hell? You would think he was being sarcastic, but at no point do they discuss anything remotely having to do with Conservative threats of violence or anything similar. It is completely out of the blue. He simply calls his audience "Tim McVeigh wannabe's", they cheer and cut to commercial.

Disgusting, inappropriate, untimely and extremely ignorant. It is bad enough of a thing for Hannity to say, but the fact that it is cheered is doubly upsetting. Given the recent arrest of the "Hutaree 8," an apocalyptic Christian militia organization planning to attack federal officials with improvised explosives, the surge in vandalism against Democratic offices, and the upcoming Second Amendment March - scheduled for the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City Bombing this April 19th. That act of terrorism was in turn performed on the anniversary of the final assault on the Branch Davidian cult in Waco, Texas.

So what the hell was this? A joke? Sarcasm? Simple stupidity on a level not even Glenn Beck could manage?

If it wasn't a joke, but a sincere compliment given to American citizens, that is something far worse. Timothy McVeigh was a lone-wolf terrorist driven by resentment of the federal government, extreme libertarian political views and a fascination with organized Militia movements. He killed 168 people, including 19 children.

This is not a person to cheer. This is not a person to idolize. This is not a person to emulate.
